The CE Mark for Windows and Doors: What’s Behind It and Why It Matters for Consumers?

In Europe, only CE-certified windows and doors can be placed on the market. Product standards define the performance characteristics and behavior of construction elements, ensuring that a product meets essential requirements. The performance declaration is compared to national regulations, which specify the minimum capabilities a product must have. These requirements can be further enhanced by customers, planners, or consultants.

Before entering the European market, windows and doors must meet specific standards and requirements to earn CE certification. The CE mark indicates that a product complies with European safety, health, and environmental regulations. To obtain CE certification, manufacturers must pass both initial type testing and factory production control—the two pillars that ensure compliance with European standards.

Initial Type Testing

The initial type test is an independent evaluation of the product to verify that it meets applicable standards and technical specifications. This testing, conducted by accredited institutions, assesses aspects such as thermal insulation, soundproofing, air permeability, water tightness, and burglary resistance.

Factory Production Control (FPC)

Factory production control refers to the manufacturer’s internal monitoring and regulation of production processes to ensure consistent product quality. The FPC guarantees that products match the declared performance from initial testing. This includes regular calibration of production equipment, employee training, adherence to quality standards, and documentation of manufacturing processes.

Once both the initial type test and factory production control are successfully completed and the product meets all required standards, the window or door can be labeled with the CE mark and legally sold in the European market. The performance declaration provides consumers with clear information about the product’s capabilities.
